About Me

Hi! I’m Fatema Jivanjee-Shakir, LMSW. I am a social worker who is passionate about creating spaces of compassion, safety, and empowerment for others. I am dedicated to social justice and examining the internal and external factors that impact your wellbeing with curiosity and sensitivity.

I specialize in the treatment of eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image concerns. I also concentrate on supporting those with mood, anxiety, trauma, borderline personality disorder, and relationship problems.

As a Muslim, South Asian American, I have a deep understanding of how culture, religion, and living in the U.S. as a person of color can intersect and impact mental health – particularly one’s relationship with food & their body. I have a special passion for working with BIPOC clients.

I have extensive experience working with adults and adolescents in individual, group, and family therapy at the residential, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and outpatient levels of care. My work is strongly informed by the Health at Every Size
perspective and intersectional approaches to healing. I am anti-diet, fat-positive, disability-inclusive, and LGBTQIA2S+ affirming.

I utilize a warm, collaborative, trauma-informed, and culturally-aware approach to therapy that blends cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), mindfulness, and psychodynamic approaches.  My goal
is to build a supportive therapeutic relationship with you to help you explore and understand your experiences, while also supporting you to grow and live a life that is more aligned with your values and goals.

I currently work at Conason Psychological Services, where I am accepting clients for individual & couple’s therapy. I was most recently a Primary Therapist at The Renfrew Center. I am a Board Member of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals New York chapter.

I obtained my Masters in Social Work from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology & Educational Studies from Swarthmore College.
